In this encounter, is it known whether or not the creature was hit by the shot? If so what type of “gun” was used, and what effect did the hit have? You can hit a deer at 50 yards with bird shot from a shotgun and there will be no effect, other than the deer running hell bent for the horizon. A little more detail in the encounter would be nice.

And if it was sighted in New Jersey it would be called the “Jersey Devil”.

The Jersey Devil has been reported to have bat-like wings. And its also been reported to have a deer-like head, which is pretty similar to a fruit bat’s – long snout, large eye, large ears.

Sounds like a fruitbat in Wisconsin, except for the scale and the climate. Scale at least is something that witnesses usually get wrong, perceiving the thing as much larger than it is, though the difference between a fruitbat and this thing is pretty extreme.

I don’t know. Some of these things sound more paranormal or products of misidentification in the excitement of the moment. Still I guess it doesn’t hurt to keep an open mind.

Would be interesting to consider how you should deal with this creature if you meet one and if you was hunting one what would you take ..

Another bit of “winged weirdie” synchronicity; Wisconsin gets a Man Bat sighting Sept. 26, featuring something with a wolflike head and batlike wings the size of a man (see cnb-scene.com site, brayupdate page), and the new issue of FATE recounts a reader story of a Man Bat sighting in Texas, with a head described as “canine, like a wolf.” One big difference was that the Wisconsin encounter left the two witnesses immediately sick. One vomited seven times and the other, who was nauseated but unable to vomit fully, ended up with a type of pneumonia that was finally diagnosed as neither viral nor bacterial, but “toxic.” Six weeks later, he has not fully recovered.

Had these been reported in the Pacific NW they might have been taken to be young batsquatches.

Chupas have been so variously described that its obvious that there is a lot of mis-id’ing happening. Especially of the canine sort.

As to Mothman, if Batman hadn’t been on tv at the time to inspire its catchy name I think it would have faded immediately into obscurity. Mis-id’ed owls or cranes originally with generous portions of deliberate folklore added later.
