I grew up on the West coast of BC and am quite familiar with the pugwis...but then, I immersed myself in Kwakiutl, Salish, Haida, Tlingit, Saanich, Squamish, etc mythos.

There seems to be crazy stuff happening all the time in Canada, pretty weird. I believe it's true, probably some sort of Lizard man or frog dude.

If this happened in 1972, these children would be adults now... probably in their 40's. I wonder if anyone has followed up with them recently to see if their story has changed, or if they are sticking to their guns, so to speak.

If they staged this as a hoax somehow, they might be willing to come clean now. I would also be interested in seeing them pass a lie detector test.

This would be a great follow-up piece!

Quite an interesting story, John. I have long been interested in stories of water beings such as the Gillman, and merbeings. It just seems with the myriad stories about them, there must be a kernel of truth somewhere amongst the chaff! Living in the Puget Sound area, I had never heard the story of Pugwis that Loren mentions. I certainly want to look into it in more depth and since the Sasquatch is also a prominent figure in the totems, it will certainly be interesting to look for the Pugwis in them also. Thanks for most interesting information.

How tall was this Gillman? Kind of sounds like an episode of the X-Files. If something came out of the water you would think that their would be a footprint on the bank or the edge of the water. This is a very strange report indeed.

Good contribution John. Always nice to hear about the Thetis Lake Gillman, Lizardman, or Merbeing without any immediate dismissing of it just because the eyewitnesses were adolescents.

BTW, during my investigations at the time, I discovered a revelant nearby bit of folklore. A similar creature has been reported in nearby Puget Sound in Washington. The Kwakiutl Indian merman, Pugwis is sort of a cross between Sasquatch and the Creature from the Black Lagoon. Its fish-like face and paired incisors make this undersea spirit a prominent figure in First Nations legend and is easily recognized in wood-carved art.
