... and a few minutes after my last post, that news headlines.

Ten points for SMH raising public awareness! :D

Now it's up to the public to respond. It seems the co-ordinating body for community action is the Wilderness Society.

Take a look at one person's interpretation of the forecast logging data for Australia's state of Tasmania.

I make no comment on the validity of the interpretation, but one thing's for sure - logging old growth forests is a scorching topic in Tasmania.

And something else open for interpretation - is whether or not the evidence supports the view that the thylacine still lives on in these threatened habitats.

Certainly, some Tasmanians have achieved a lot of good throughout the years in having so much of the state's wilderness preserved, but do we really have to chop down every tree right up to the borders of the reserves?

I agree with Youcan. Only seven percent of our landmass in the lower forty-eight states is preserved as wilderness. If we could add only three percent (and there are still wild areas that we can save) we would be preserving an untold number of species known and unknown for future discovery. I wonder how many cryptids we pushed into extinction with a bulldozer and a chainsaw?

"We can’t conserve what we don’t know we have." - well I don't know if I agree with that!

Set aside any sizable slab of the planet with "do not touch" signs attached and you'll almost certainly be conserving what you don't know you have.

Sad that for every new species of lizard or frog discovered, many more are becoming extinct. Frogs are especially at risk now and are dissappearing at an alarming rate all over the world.
