New Hawaiian Shark Discovered

Posted by: Loren Coleman on September 8th, 2007

Click here for news of a new species of shark found over 3000 feet deep off Hawaii, as per this KHON broadcast. It survived for five days alive, and was recorded quite closely by scientists and journalists.

Funny, its shape and head sort of reminded me of this:

I think you might be onto something there. This is the first suggestion that I didn’t say, “nah, not even close.” There are certain similarities that are undeniable. By the way, that LASIKplus ad at the top is causing my browser to hang up and behave funny.

  2. Bob Michaels responds:

You are on to something Loren! It has to be a bottom dweller. The question How many new shark species await discovery?

  3. deejay responds:

I think you may be right Loren, is there a way you can send that photo out to someone studying the new species? Very exciting stuff!

  4. Quacker1 responds:

Very few similarities. The head is all wrong, and the eyes on the sponge-head are much larger in comparison to its head.

  6. Jason P. responds:

I’m with Quacker1 here. I really don’t see the similarity at all, unfortunately.

  7. cor2879 responds:

Very interesting, I think we may have a candidate this time. Too bad they didn’t show a picture of the whole animal…

  8. mystery_man responds:

I don’t know. To me, the general shape of the mystery fish photo looks more indicative of a pelagic (open water) shark rather than a benthic (bottom dwelling) one. That is if the thing in the photo is even a shark at all. I can see what Loren means, but it isn’t a match for me.

  9. mystery_man responds:

At any rate, considering the rate at which shark species are being wiped out, it is good to see that there are still species out there to be discovered.
