Years ago my father (a true cynic with a very practicaL streak) was put in a position where he was forced to shoot and kill three black bears in the East Kootenays, where we lived. He was in a lot of danger, and it was deemed self-defense by provincial authorities.

He told me “they screamed like human beings when shot. I never want to do that again. It was way too disturbing.”

So, I don’t know whether or not the noises the animal made would be so reliable as an argument for it. Seems very easy to confuse the sounds if you’ve never shot a bear yourself before…the eye-witnesses, however, are another matter. Who knows, since the doc didn’t see it and no other names were taken…
