The Mysterious Monsters

Posted by: Craig Woolheater on April 6th, 2007

Great Crypto-Cinema from the seventies. Hosted by Peter Graves of Mission Impossible fame.

Bigfoot: living creature, or myth? Join your host Peter Graves, as he attempts to answer that question in The Mysterious Monsters – one of the most fascinating documentaries ever filmed. You’ll hear eyewitness accounts from ordinary people who have encountered the legendary monster… and you’ll see them recall their tales while under hypnosis, or attached to a lie detectors. You’ll see scientists subjecting samples of Bigfoot evidence to intense scrutiny. You’ll thrill to hair-raising reenactments of actual Bigfoot encounters. Even the famous “Patterson film” is analyzed in detail by experts. As a bonus, you’ll also see amazing coverage of the Loch Ness monster – including a fatal speedboat accident that has often been attributed to the beast. The Mysterious Monsters, released at the height of the 1970’s Bigfoot craze, is general considered the seminal documentary in this genre. This is the movie that everyone was talking about – relive the wonder all over again!Amazon.com

The DVD is available from several sources, including Amazon.com.

I have this film on DVD and it is one of the best documentaries on bigfoot/sasquatch ever made. It is very well done and the makeup in it isn’t too bad either, even though it was made in the early seventies. Definitely worth the money! Now I’m just waiting for Manbeast!myth or monster to be officially released on DVD.

  2. joppa responds:

Really well done documentary; I still see it on cable now and then.

I saw this on CBS during primetime back in the seventies. I was probably about four years old, and after seeing the scene when the Bigfoot breaks in the window, I refused to sleep by a window for months. I can also thank this one for years of childhood nightmares. Thanks, Peter Graves!

  4. Daryl Colyer responds:

This is probably my favorite documentary dealing primarily with the sasquatch; I have seen it several times and I always quite enjoy it. I wish Peter Graves would do another one. Maybe if the TBRC does a documentary in the future, we can get Peter Graves to host it.

  5. Kimble responds:

Is this the one where the hand goes through the living room window, grabbing at the girl? Then the husband opens the front door only to be face to face with “you know who?”

I sat in the Saco Cinema down by the front right exit be the screen. It was a dark tunnel with an old velvet drape. I think I hid under my coat after that scene.

I will probably try and rent it or buy it soon. I first saw it with my mother when I was living at Houghton Lake, Mi, around 1975 it seems. We saw it at the Pines Theatre (what a memorable evening) at Houghton Lake and it really captured my fascination with the Bigfoot phenomenon. I had forgotten all about this feature film-documentary. My mom passed away in 1985, but I remember that my dad wouldn’t go because he didn’t believe in Bigfoot at the time, so mom said to me “Let’s go, it might be good.” Thanks.

  7. gridbug responds:

Excellent! This (along with Legend of Boggy Creek) was what got me into the Bigfoot fanclub back in the 70’s! I have a raggedy old VHS copy of Mysterious Monsters but would love to upgrade to DVD… can anyone vouch for the quality of this one? I didn’t know it was on disc until now…

BTW, I have vivid recollections of a pretty decent Bigfoot TV documentary from I think the 80’s but have no idea what the name is… the one sequence that’s burned into my mind was a woman living in a two story cabin in the woods who wakes up one moonlit evening to see a squatch sitting in her rocking chair staring at her! She shrieks and the squatch skeedaddles down the steps and out the door… it scared me then, and it scares me now! Does this rind a bell with anyone? It might have been a re-vamp of one the David C. Wolper docs but I haven’t been able to track down/verify it.

Any help on this would be fantastic! 😀

  8. gridbug responds:

Oh, and any other leads on obscure 70’s cryptodocs are always welcome too… thanx!

  9. elsanto responds:

    Gridbug,

I believe you are referring to Manbeast: Myth or Monster, to which Squatchwatcher has also alluded. I vividly remember that scene — it’s an account of an encounter with an Almas in the Caucasus.

I also remember having wanted to see Mysterious Monsters as a kid, but never having gotten the chance.

  10. gridbug responds:

Thanx a million, elsanto! I found a resource online from which I may be able to obtain a copy, I’ll be sure to post my results for the rest of us.

And if you need any assistance contra las Mujeres Vampiro, I’m yer man! 😀

  11. mrbf2006 responds:

I own this on DVD, and I can credit this and the book as what started my interest in Sasquatch and all things cryptozoological. I taped it off TBS several years ago, but the quality of the videotaped copy wasn’t all that good, so when I won a copy of it on DVD from Ebay a few years ago, I was ecstatic. The copy I have is a Japanese import and is in great condition, from one of the few filmstrip copies. This is one of my favorites and a true Cryptozoological classic.

  12. gridbug responds:

mrbf2006: Any chance you know where a like-minded soul could get a copy as good as that? I found someone online selling copies on DVD and VHS in a collector-to-collector capacity but I’d love to get the best quality available… my apologies to the moderators if soliciting info on out-of-print material is a no no here… just trying to make the best of limitations. Thanx!

  13. bill green responds:

  14. squatchwatcher responds:

I bought my Mysterious Monsters DVD online at Amazon.com. The quality of the picture is actually pretty good considering the age of the film. Also, it was Manbeast! Myth or Monster that had the scene with the squatch watching (ha!) the woman sleep. I also have this on DVD, I bought it from a guy on the internet, but I don’t know if I can give that info on this site, the quality of this DVD was also very good, but was in DVD-R form.

  15. mystery_man responds:

Wow, thanks for putting this one up! I had never seen this documentary before which is odd since I have always been a big fan of documentaries on cryptozoology. I used to love the Arthur C. Clarke series.

  16. Maine Crypto responds:

Hey, what a blast from the past mystery man, I used to love those Arthur C. Clarke series too. My dad and I used to watch them all the time! Thanks for reminding me of them.

This one looks good too, I’ll have to pick up a copy!
