I am very familiar with the area where the Great Swamp Devil is believed to reside, in particular the Lord Stirling Park section of the Great Swamp. I have walked through this area for about two years. I take trails that venture me deep into the woods. I had never seen or heard anything out of the ordinary. I would especially enjoy these walks when the park was empty so I could enjoy the natural quiet of my surroundings. In early September of this year I took my usual walk in the park at about 3:00 PM in the afternoon. It was a week day so the park was pretty much empty. About a quarter of the way on my journey I heard a loud distant growl. I took me by surprise; I had never heard such a sound. It was in the distance but not very far away and sounded as if was from a large animal. The growl sounded like a warning as to imply that my presence in the park was not appreciated. I saw nothing out of the ordinary and only heard the sound once. Needless to say I took a quick but dignified exit from the park. I asked the park’s wildlife experts what the growl could have been. They were at a loss for an explanation. They stated that bears have been seen in the area but they are usually seen in the spring (in this section of New Jersey). It might have been a coyote, but I explained that the growl appeared to be from a larger animal. I have not heard the sound since nor seen anything out of the ordinary. However, I am happier now when the park is more active with other people.

Craig, there is a great thread regarding the Jersey Devil at Bigfoot forums. I think that SgtFang has REALLY hit the nail on the head with this one (you can read his post at the thread, but the bat picture is missing) He had found an African(?) bat that looks EXACTLY like the 1909 drawings made of the Jersey Devil from eyewitness accounts. His theory is that they somehow stowed away and escaped. That might help explain the "horse shoe like" tracks in the snow too.

BUT, I don't think that means there aren't Sasquatch sightings there too! I personally think that is what causes the confusion between the two!

You can find it on <a href="http://www.bigfootforums.com/index.php?showtopic=6080">Bigfoot Forums here</a>.

Im am new to all this.. But I am starting to notice, with different areas of the country, come different names, which do not make this search any easier. How does one seperate the legend from what could possibly be a real animal? Especially when names like "Devil" exist.

Interesting :) The mystery continues
