"Wolfe escorted Westby to some footprints, where Westby saw huge wedge- or duck-shaped feet spaced six and seven feet apart." Perhaps this was Bigfoots marine cousin, "Duckfoot."

The early part of the story where it talked about the critter chasing along side the car reminded me of some of the mothman incidents. Of course the mothman was different in description, but still made me think of it.

All I have to say is that "telepath" is a word seldom employed in everyday conversation, at least outside of science fiction circles. I would have expected "psychic", "medium", "seer", "mystic", or even "channeler" employed before that term came up in conversation, especially back in the 60's.

Wow - I had completely forgotten about this story. Back in Junior High, I had an english teacher who had written a book about strange occurrences in Oregon ("Oregon's Ghosts & Monsters" by Mike Helm, Rainy Day Press 1983). I think he used it in a creative writing class and I was so taken by some of the stories (including the Conser Lake one) that I swiped a copy from the school.

I recall being terrified everytime we'd drive down I-5 through Millersburg, knowing that the monster might decide to drag itself out of the sludge pond at the stinky pulp mill and chase our broken down old volvo along the highway (driving through the coast range caused similar bigfoot based panic attacks, yikes!).

The Millersburg area is still very much undeveloped, despite being midway between Portand and Eugene, and so close to Salem (I think it's the stench of the mill - a bit like stale cat urine and rotten cabbage. I've heard that the mill pays property taxes for all the locals to make up for the aroma.), and there are acres and acres of farmland all around there, as well as rivers, lakes and wetlands. Plenty of space for a screaming albino lake ape thing from outerspace to hide out.

I'll have to ask my family in Scio (another small town very close by) if they recall any of this, as they were all young 'uns in the area at the time.

mystery_man, I think what the point about flying saucers and invisibility etc was getting at is that the 'creature' could have links with the saucer, thus be an 'alien' in the minds of the witnesses. So quite rightly, they cannot be classed as a normally occurring biological entity of the natural world, only of another world :) And let's face it, tigers and aliens would most likely be quite different ;)
I do see your point though mystery_man and it does indeed also pain me when we hear news of new things, followed on by 'its eyes glowed red as it was reading my mind' by the obviously publicity-seeking witness, was merely pointing out the arguments people would use :P. At the end of the day though, we don't know what was going on back then, none of us do. It could have been the good ol' yeti, a guy in a fluffy suit, a group-drug-induced hallucination, beings from another planet or like the yeti some would have us believe, just an undiscovered species living alongside us. As for mental powers etc, again, just because 'we' dont (some say they do), doesn't mean others can't so i'm open minded (those who believe in telekenesis, raise my hand) to any suggestions as to a possible culprit.

The mention of flying saucers, powers of invisibility, and mental telepathy make me roll my eyes and groan. Even if these events happened that way, we are then not dealing with a normally occurring biological entity of the natural world. Some people are going to say "how can you write off these accounts like that?". Well, just the same way a zoologist would if you told him the tigers he was studying have mental powers and can turn invisible.

It reminds me of a story some guys related to my sister's one night in the early 70's in a Huntsville Alabama bar. They told them a story about a hairy white manlike moster, that was frequently seen by teens in a lovers lane area outside of some rural southern comunity. Like this thing, it appeared after a UFO incident in the area. It supposedly tore a pack of wild dogs apart, and was suspected of killing some of the local (I believe the term the guys used was "hill people") who's remains were found with the bones cracked open, as if something were after the marrow. My sisters said the guys seemed visibly scared as they told thier tale, and gave them the name of a the town in which these things supposedly occurred and records of the missing people were still on file. It was probably just a tall tale to impress a couple of Yankee girls in a bar, but it sure gave me the creeps for a few years whenever I was in the woods.
If anybody else ever heard a version of this tale, I'd sure like to hear it.
