i watched this episaode on youtube (Canada here), and I did not see anything compelling in the video footage shown to make me think that the creatures caught on film were anything more than a pod of cetaceans... porpoises/ small dolphins to my mind.

if not for the rearward exhalation, then it could even have been phocids, otariids, or otters for all we can tell.

none of us likely know the man who took this footage, so we should have no problem being skeptical as to its authenticity. if anyone here does know him and would claim to be of good character and all that... all that means is that he has not acted in a dubious manner before. there is nothing preventing an upright citizen from engaging in a hoax, such as claiming that a pod of porpoises is actually a contingent of sea monsters.

why would anyone do such a thing? there are a million and one reasons why, but it only takes one to appeal to someone. did the videographer benefit in any known way from this presentation? just a rhetorical question to leave this issue on.

the only interesting event in the episode was the large white object seen "swimming" under the boat when the Hillstranded crew, who were not the original videographers i must point out, went looking in Lake Iliamna.

I love "River Monsters", but I don't think that Jeremy Wade gave Lake Iliamna as thorough an investigation as it required, and the white object under the Hillstrands' boat shows that.

Please, Mr. Wade.... YOU go back to Iliamna... I think I speak for most when I say that the Hillstrands just made me lose a couple hundred thousand brain cells in one viewing. There is a reason i despise reality T.V., and good ole boys chucking explosives into a lake and chuckling about it is a fair summation of their suitability and capability.

I vote that from here on in, Jeremy Wade handles all investigations of Lake Iliamna... and opens up a "Sea Monsters" spinoff so that we can get him on to the Cadborosaurus as well. :)

They kept inter-cutting the action on the boat with under water shots, then suddenly they have this giant thing next to the boat you can just barely see from the surface, and they don't have any under water shots, nor do they make any attempts to get under water video shots? What's wrong with this picture?

They also find bent hooks and partly eaten bait, but they don't send the results out for DNA analysis? I thought crypto documentaries loved to send samples out for DNA analysis?

If they were really expecting to hook a large "sea monster," they would really do it by pulling line in by hand? They'd get their arms ripped off or something.

This was very contrived--more so than "Finding Bigfoot" or other shows.

@opalman,

I agree with your opinion that the underwater 'blob' that was shown at the end of the show was probably a Beluga. In any case it was white-colored, whereas the 'thing' captured in the footage in dispute was dark, and so was the creature reported in the several anecdotal accounts used during the program.

It wouldn't surprise me if we later find out the two guys knew it was a Beluga all along, and the uncertainty shown in the show was a deliberate editing maneuver of the Discovery channel... the same way they wanted to add drama at the expense of Matt Moneymaker on the Finding Bigfoot show.

Well folks...Discovery Channel has done it again. The Hillstrand’s antics are at least somewhat entertaining; unlike the casts of other crypto-documentary series recently aired on the channel. For those who have never watched, you should check out the ‘Deadliest Catch’ series. It demonstrates what the DC is capable of producing when they need to; very real, true high adventure.

BTW; I have heard of reliable reports of belugas or beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas) being observed in Lake Illiamna. That’s what the white creature that maneuvered beside the boat in shallow water looked like to me. The fact that it sprayed water seems to give credence to that possibility. (blow hole)
It girth was much too wide to have been a sturgeon. White sturgeons are not white except their undersides, which are whitish-grey.

What a disappointment. I have been looking forward to this footage since it was first announced. The show was a joke and it is a huge disappointment they did not show the film in its entirety.

Is there anything we can do to see this footage? Who can we contact and bother about showing this footage completely...

"It must be able to breath water because it goes down!" LOL He says this right after the "creature" apparently takes a breath at the surface.......Anyways it almost looks like that might be a fin or appendage making the splash and not a blowhole?
